Yes, you heard right – on August 25, all around the world, people are exercising their right to go shirtless. Yes, men, women, and everyone in between, all thanks to the organization GoTopless (beware, this site contains topless photos, of men and women).

Few people know that women are legally able to go topless in many areas of the United States. However, there is an extreme stigma against women going shirtless. The idea of a man going topless is normal, even expected at places like the beach or parks. What is the major difference? Why is it considered scandalous for a woman to go without a shirt? In our society, naked women are instantly considered sexual, no matter what the situation is. A naked man is just that – a naked man. While, yes, men can be sexualized, but not nearly to the same degree as women are.
GoTopless is fighting against this double standard, hoping to achieve either topless rights for all or equal decency standards. If women cannot go topless, men should also cover their chests. At many past GoTopless protests, women went shirtless while men wore bikinis. At other protests, everyone taped X’s over their nipples. The universal goal is equal standards, in whatever form that takes.
